" THE CURIOUS CASE OF THE HEADLESS PRIEST IN ILOILO -- PICTURE IS AUTHENTIC, NO PHOTOSHOP APPLIED
Over the weekend, a photo of a child that was taken inside the St. Anne Cathedral in Molo, Iloilo City with what seemed to be a ''headless priest'' on the sidelines went viral in many social media sites and was even featured in TV Patrol this weekend. The photo became quickly controversial because the caption of the original post suggested a paranormal occurrence bordering to the occult: A HEADLESS PRIEST INSIDE A CHURCH.
Let us now focus our attention to the authenticity of the photo: was it in its authentic state or was it edited? Even without examining the pixel properties of the picture, I am confident with full certainty that the photo was not altered, IT WAS AUTHENTIC. IT WAS NOT PHOTOSHOPPED.
But let me be quick to clarify: the photo was authentic and the image of what appeared to be a headless priest is authentic and was not superimposed nor altered but it was not actually a headless priest but an old woman with a debilitating physical deformity in the spine called Severe or Advanced Cervical Kyphosis with a chin to chest deformity. The old woman looked "headless" because the angle of her shot was taken almost from behind with her head concealed by the armsleeve of her dress. She was mistakenly identified as a priest because of her dark brown to dark maroon attire that resembled those tunics/vestments worn by priests in the medieval period. If only the angle of the shot was taken from the front or from the direct side, her head could have been seen.
I have personally seen this woman back in high school sixteen years ago. She used to attend mass at my school's parish in Santa Maria Church (Ateneo de Iloilo) in Gen. Blanco St, Iloilo City but her neck was not that severely disfigured yet. When I first saw the viral photo, I already had the inclination to believe that this was the woman I used to look at in amazement back in high school but I was not quite sure of my thoughts so I just kept mum about the issue. It was only this morning that I stumbled upon the post of Michael Francis Panes Misola clarifying the "headless priest" photo with an attached photo of the woman in another church that I finally confirmed my suspicion: the "headless priest" in the viral photo was indeed the woman with the neck deformity. The second picture was taken by his brother inside Santa Maria Church last April 19, 2015. According to Mr. Misola, his brother who was seated several pews behind the alleged "headless priest" was horrified to see a headless person in front of him so he took a photo of what he saw. He couldn't believe his eyes so he approached the headless figure and to his surprise/relief, the headless person was not a ghostly apparition but an old woman with a severe back/neck ailment. The poor old lady's head was bent all the way down her chest.
As to why the old woman was photographed wearing the same outfit in two separate occasions, the explanation is simple. Old women especially in the provinces who religiously go to church and attend mass everyday usually have their so-called "church attire", a dress (with one design) they wear when they go to church. In the case of the old woman, the tailored-fit dark bown to dark maroon colored dress was just her personal choice.
I hope this clears the issue!

Thanks to Tim and Michael and other concerned citizens, the viral photos are now cleared to us and its up to us to believe.
